December

December is here, readers. Which means that Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and The Final Countdown (?) are rubbing their magic gleefully upon all festivities and their merry band of fans. I'm a little involved in shopping this time; despite the constant madness surrounding holiday shopping and such, when the time has come for the unexpected shopper, which means me, there has to be some way that would avoid a stampede while trying to get a nice, thoughtful gift for that special someone. I mean, it is just a gift. Nobody needs to bleed and tear in the process. Then, there is the much dreaded Christmas reunion with people who you just don't want to meet. Sure, it is just once every year. Save it.

Anyway, I keep wishing that Winter would stop by so that I could build a snowman outside my apartment. With innovation and creativity flourishing over the years, it is possible to simulate snow and such. But that is still nothing compared to reality. I would love to learn skiing at an actual ski resort, not some simulator. No offence. I know that the idea is on the contrary rather welcomed by a lot of people. There used to be quite a successful one many years ago which I no longer remember the name of. Some friends and I threw fake snow at one another. Yay.

The best friend and I love a little Christmas gift exchange. For some years, we would let ourselves loose in a shopping mall for an hour or so, getting a present for each other and meeting back later. For convenience, we would save on the gift wrapping and simply hand over the carriers. That experience still holds as the most memorable. Parties are considered rare. However, I have seen a couple of real Christmas trees inside the language school where I'm studying Japanese at. At least, I know that those trees are real; a friend has seen one of the teachers bending down to water them.

Naturally, the festivities come with loops and loops of Christmas music, which has long started since November (or even October). There aren't many Christmas songs that I would kill to listen to, unless it is The 12 Days of Christmas which still triggers a wicked inside joke between me and some friends. Carollers are fine though. Their cheer resonates throughout the shopping mall even if you aren't too fond of that notion. I love it when they stand outside a cafe or something. Quite unfortunately, they don't sing in Japanese. Is there anything like a Cardcaptor Sakura Christmas Concert over here? If anybody hadn't realised already, this is so full of Cardcaptor Sakura. Cute and timeless.

Santa Claus (or any of his assistants, Rudolph maybe?), I haven't been a good boy this year. Well, in the first place that sounds so corny. Anyway, I don't have a chimney where you can slide down from. I don't hang up Christmas stockings. I don't have milk and chocolate chip cookies on the table. But I have a postal address where you can send presents to. How about a Kero-chan and Suppi doughnut? Don't worry, I won't even attempt to eat that. I mean, not yet.

December isn't just about the festivities. But let's just leave the rest till another time.

Eccentrically Yours.
