Akagami no Shirayukihime: Snow White with the Red Hair

Hello readers. I have done a little research on the anime department in an effort to spice up my otherwise mundane and dead-end situation. There are supposedly many, many titles this Summer, yet the magnetism isn't quite working. Maybe it is due to that many which overwhelm the thought and decision process. But I'm going to attempt fishing out a few more titles to add to my collection. Summer still has a pretty long way to go. If you have already found your favourites, I say wonderful. Fret not if you haven't though, for I would like to offer some suggestions here as well. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. No matter how weak it is, it is still a light. Here we go.

Now, I have actually stumbled across the manga way before its anime adaptation premiered. 'Akagami no Shirayukihime' or 'Snow White with the Red Hair' isn't your familiar Disney classic re-imagined. There is no sight of the seven dwarves, even though apples and a reference to the mirror appear in the first episode. Oh, the female protagonist is named Shirayuki, but that is really just it. No bigger shadows of your childhood memory overcast the course of this series. Honestly, there isn't a need to dig deeper into the trenches as the title itself is quite self-sufficient in captivating an audience. Everything else should be able to flow naturally.

Well, in my case I'm not really drawn to the manga although their presence has been trying hard to lure my attention. For starters, I don't consider myself as a fan of the fantasy genre. While it would be pretty refreshing to read about red-haired Snow White and her adventures, the magic somehow doesn't work on me. I hope it would work on some people however. Anyway, I decided to give the anime a go for an apparent reason. While I can't say for certain if I would fall in love with the anime over time, I take my hat off for its originality and creativity. It is indeed refreshing.

Since the title mentions a red-haired Snow White, there you have her - enter Shirayuki, whose natural, beautiful red hair is considered rare in the kingdom of Tanbarun. Because of that, Shirayuki is cornered by Raji, the prince of Tanbarun into becoming his concubine. Unwilling to bow down to the pressure, Shirayuki escapes on a horse wagon after cutting her hair and preparing the last batch of herbs for her patients. Yeah, Snow White is actually a professional herbalist. How awesome is that?

After a presumably long journey, Shirayuki stops for some rest at a grand house but is unable to locate its residents. She sits herself comfortably outside the house while waiting for anyone to pass by. The next day, Shirayuki encounters the second prince of the kingdom of Clarines, Zen as he jumps over a wall. Accompanying Zen are two of his aides, Mitsuhide and Kiki. Zen becomes injured as a result of the distraction and Shirayuki offers to treat his wound. A friendship quickly develops as Zen and Shirayuki get to know each other better. Meanwhile, the prince of Tanbarun has managed to discover Shirayuki's whereabouts.

I have to say that the first episode has entertained me tremendously. It is relatively easy to ditch any worn perception of Snow White which one might have upon watching the anime. That said, I'm giving this another go. Shirayuki's skills as a herbalist get a full throttle as she becomes a pharmacist in the kingdom of Clarines. Hopefully, I would have a blossoming love for the series as it progresses.

Eccentrically Yours.
