What stops somebody from continuing to pursue his or her dreams? Life throws more than just lemons, at least that is how I see it in the complicated world we are living today. While most reasons could be attributed to the physical well-being of the individual, it is usually the mental or emotional aspect that triggers reluctance and inability to keep moving along. But what if there was this special person who appeared randomly or otherwise right in front of his or her eyes, and simply gave no apologies for being free and true to oneself, would the circumstances see a glimpse of hope at the end of the tunnel?I know of this gifted boy who is going through a phase like that. He is 14 year-old Arima Kousei, a piano prodigy who dominated various piano recital competitions as a child until an unfortunate incident shattered his world and in turn shut off the pianist in him. During a recital, Kousei became unable to hear the piece that he was playing despite having no problems with his hearing. He eventually quit the piano and it has been a few years since then.
Kousei often hangs out with his two friends, Sawabe Tsubaki and Watari Ryouta. Both have been Kousei's friends since childhood. Tsubaki is also Kousei's neighbour; she is a member of the school's softball club. Her overly aggressive antics during club practices have often resulted in the school's windows being shattered which unfortunately implicates Kousei since the windows in question are those of the music preparation room that he regularly utilises. Worse still, some shards have also made their way across his face. Ouch.
Tsubaki worries quite a great deal about Kousei ever since his withdrawal from the piano. Kousei would only view his world in nothing but monotone. Tsubaki wishes to see her friend return to the piano as it has been three years since that incident. On one afternoon, Tsubaki sneaked up behind Kousei and realised that he was writing music on a score sheet. Kousei mentioned that he was only transcribing music while listening to the track (it was for a part-time job assignment).
Watari Ryouta is the captain of the school's soccer club. He is extremely popular with girls, and digs them too. Although Ryouta is said to be frivolous, he does say nice things from time to time. He is fond of Miyazono Kawori, a friend of Tsubaki's.
Miyazono Kawori becomes the catalyst for Kousei's slow but gradual return to the music world. Kawori also plays an instrument herself; she is a gifted violinist who is aware of Kousei's talent and his participation in various competitions back then. Kawori also has hopes for Kousei. Their first encounter had been rather accidental and somewhat unpleasant (though in the comical sense). As a violinist, Kawori takes on an unconventional approach during recitals and such, which often draws criticisms from judges. However, the audience mostly supports her playing methods.
Kawori may seem bright and cheery, yet deep down she is a lonely soul who yearns for friendship especially with Kousei whom she holds a special affection for. She would confide in Kousei, telling him not to distance himself from others. She wants to become closer to Kousei. Ironically, Kousei's initial impression of her wasn't that good; he thought that her personality was the worst and she was only good at quarrelling with others.
Recently, I have been invited to tag along to Kawori's violin recital. Naturally, I'm so looking forward to that! I also wonder what Kousei's reaction would be towards that magical moment. Anybody else going to the recital? Honestly, I can't wait.
