Grade School Girls are the Best!
Being an
18-year old college student, you might expect me to be actually fond of kids.
Their laughter, their cuteness, the things they do, people would normally find
them adorable. Not for me though. I neither like them nor hate them.
That being
said, I guess it’s pretty ironic and surprising that I watched and liked the
series Ro-Kyu-Bu!
Ro-Kyu-Bu!
is an anime about a grade school all-girl basketball club that was nearly
driven out of existence by the rival all-boy basketball club from the same
school. More importantly, the series (as is what’s usually seen in any anime)
centred on the friendship of 5 normal girls who just love the game so much,
guided by a high school boy sharing the same passion.
A new
concept, I must say. At least, for me.
Why is it
something new for me?
We’re
talking about a girls’ basketball club here. In an elementary school. Having
watched Slam Dunk and Dear Boys before (both of which were about high school
basketball clubs), and being much more usual for me to see boys in a basketball
(and even sports) anime, Ro-Kyu-Bu! lit a fire in my anime-lover self.
Ro-Kyu-Bu!’s
a nearly perfect anime. The story’s better than most anime I’d already watched.
The seiyuu team of the anime is one of a kind: Hanazawa Kana, Ogura Yui, Iguchi
Yuka, Hidaka Rina, Kaji Yuki. I know you agree with me.
However, the
anime was flawed by the unhappy endings in the two seasons, and by the ecchi-ness
in most episodes. Their losses in the last games in both seasons remind me of
Dear Boys. Of course, I feel sorry for the team. I know you can identify with
me on that feeling, knowing that 5 grade school girls did their best to win but
seemingly, their best still isn’t enough (like the song with the lyrics “I did
my best, but I guess my best wasn’t good enough”). About the ecchi stuff, it’s
the ultimate reason why you shouldn’t watch this in public, unless you’d want
to be branded a lolicon and a pervert.
If you wanna
overdose your selves with cuteness that can ‘kill’, here’s the deal: watch the
series. I assure you, you won’t regret it. After all, “Shougakusei wa saikou da
ze!” as the ending song goes.
